WhatsApp is part of the "Facebook Family", meaning data is shared between the SMS app and its parent company. You'll note that the amount of data collected has increased-especially since Facebook's acquisition. WhatsApp then feeds back analytics to help companies understand the effectiveness of their communications. They can send you receipts, delivery information, and reminders. Nonetheless, it is used by businesses, some of which can access your contact details. It insists it's purely to further the service, including marketing, security, and customization. In some instances, WhatsApp does share information, though of course it's limited to the aforementioned data collected.
